Creating Social Connections

Our Stories: Issue 57

Age Concern Taranaki is a non-profit organisation supporting the wellbeing of people over 65 in the region. They run social programmes to build friendships and community connection. Loneliness can be an issue as we age due to a lack of mobility or transport, getting sick, or loved ones dying or moving away.

Activities range from coffee groups to outings, and a singing group, called In Tune With Waitara. “We’re not a choir. It’s more about the uplifting feeling you get from singing, and the associated health benefits, said Keryn Roderick, Executive Officer.

A grant from TSB Community Trust has really supported Age Concern's activities. “People from all different backgrounds come along to these events. It’s about being somewhere where you’re welcomed and respected.”

“Sometimes, they become friends outside of the group. Then if someone becomes unwell, the others rally round and provide meals for them.”

“We get people literally saying that coming along to the programme has changed their lives,” Keryn said.
