Guardians of Rotokare: Creating a halo of greater biodiversity.

STRATEGIC FUND // IMPROVED ENVIRONMENT

Nestled in the heart of the Taranaki region lies 230-hectares of ecological significance – Rotokare Scenic Reserve – a wildlife sanctuary surrounded by an 8.2km pest-free fence, encouraging forest rejuvenation and re-establishing endangered fauna. This sanctuary, enveloping lush native forests, wetlands, and a tranquil lake, shines as a guiding light for conservationists and nature lovers. Managed by the Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust, Rotokare embodies the spirit of preservation and community stewardship, safeguarding the region’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.

Central to Rotokare’s conservation success is its status as a predator-free environment. Encircled by a formidable predator-proof fence, the reserve serves as a fortress against invasive species like rats, stoats, and possums. This defence mechanism is crucial for the survival of native flora and fauna, allowing them to thrive without the looming threat of predation. Through diligent pest control efforts and vigilant monitoring, Rotokare remains a sanctuary where native species can flourish undisturbed, and where reintroduced species have the best chance at survival.

Recently, efforts were stepped up to make surrounding land safer. With $100k in funding from Toi Foundation, Rotokare Trust were able to run Project Halo, which traps pests on neighbouring farmland.

The “Halo Effect”, a product of the Halo Project, occurs when native species naturally spread from protected areas (like Rotokare, whose pest-free environment has boosted the numbers of native animals surrounding it), creating a ‘halo’ of greater biodiversity.

With the eradication of pests in the adjoining land, coupled with the creation of ecological corridors to other protected areas, the Trust is greatly extending the positive impacts for native species. With over a thousand traps, and working with many landowners, this project is testament to the success than comes from passionate people working together.

“The Trust is extremely grateful to Toi Foundation for their very generous grant to make this project a success,” said Dr. Bradley Schroder, General Manager at Rotokare.

As Rotokare continues its mission of conservation and restoration, the significance of its work reverberates far beyond its borders and this point in time. Through ongoing dedication, innovation, and collaboration, Rotokare paves the way for a future where nature thrives, and the wonders of Taranaki’s wilderness endure for generations to come.
