Scaling up for Impact: Rewild revolutionising predator control.
Rewild Limited, a pioneering conservation-focused enterprise based in Taranaki, is on a mission to revolutionise predator control methods for the preservation of native species. Their flagship project, the Rewild F-Bomb, represents a groundbreaking innovation in humane pest eradication. Now, with Investing for Impact support from Toi Foundation, Rewild seeks to escalate production to meet increasing demand, thereby amplifying its impact on biodiversity conservation.
The journey of the Rewild F-Bomb began with a targeted approach to combatting ferrets, one of the most detrimental predators of kiwi in Aotearoa. Through rigorous development and testing, Rewild achieved approval for Humane Ferret Eradication in 2021 at Manaaki Whenua, and production commenced in late 2022, marking a significant milestone in predator control strategies. Subsequent expansions in testing and approvals have broadened the trap’s efficacy to target other invasive species, including stoats, ship rats, and Norway rats. The potential approval for humane testing on hedgehogs underscores Rewild’s commitment to innovation and ethical wildlife management.
Despite its success, Rewild has faced production constraints that hindered its ability to meet escalating demand. With sales primarily to conservation organisations and limited retail distribution, the company has meticulously balanced quality control with market expansion. However, the growing backlog of orders and a month-long lead time necessitate a strategic shift towards scaling up production. Investment in manufacturing tooling signifies a pivotal moment for Rewild. By streamlining production processes and reducing labour and component costs, the company aims to enhance efficiency without compromising on quality or ethical standards. Importantly, these improvements are poised to elevate the trap’s performance, making it more effective and appealing to target species. This not only ensures better outcomes in pest management but also augments biodiversity preservation efforts.
The impact of this project extends beyond mere economic metrics. Rewild’s success in scaling up production holds the promise of significant socio-economic benefits, including job creation and skill development. Moreover, by bolstering the accessibility of humane pest control solutions, Rewild empowers communities and conservationists to actively participate in safeguarding their natural environments and heritage. Rewild’s Investing for Impact initiative and wider vision align with Toi Foundation’s strategic focus for improved environment, with a commitment to the protection, care, and long-term sustainability of Taranaki whenua and diverse ecosystems. Through strategic investment in production scalability, Rewild is poised to unleash the full potential of its innovative solution, fostering a legacy of environmental stewardship and conservation for generations to come.
