Swimming lessons in Stratford

Wai o Rua Aquatic Centre in Stratford wanted to support primary schools in and around the district by providing their students with free swimming and water safety lessons each term.

Toi Foundation funding of $150,000 over 12 months has enabled Wai o Rua to fund a term’s worth of transport and lesson costs for each school involved in the programme.

Instructors deliver a structured swimming programme for children at each level and teach water safety so that children know how to be safe in and around Taranaki’s lakes, rivers and beaches.

“Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and the way their swimming is improving has been awesome. We’ve delivered 1200 lessons so far, so we’re well on the way to smashing our initial 1700 target.” (Chade Julie, Acting Director for Community Services.)
